Blog — an ancient word.

The first time I heard it as a kid was in a computer magazine whose name I can no longer recall: the so-called weblog, blog for short.

I first started writing my own blog in August 2006, using “pjblog“. Some of the older bloggers out there might still have used it.

pjblog was written in ASP, and ASP was also the first dynamic web language I learned. Back then I was deeply fascinated by being able to generate dynamic content on a server and spit it out over HTTP to the browser. My first intense attachment also went to ASP. So much so that for nearly twenty years afterward, one of my password combinations contained the three letters ‘asp’.

ASP was also the most fleeting language in my life. I only used it for a year or two, for exams and informatics competitions.

Because of my own aesthetic and technical preferences, I decided to switch to PHP, and the blog to WordPress. Looking back, I still can’t tell whether WordPress drove PHP or PHP drove WordPress.

And then, time flew by. Because of WordPress’s vulnerabilities, its increasingly bloated feature set, and its unfriendly official Markdown support, the blog moved to hexo again.

I’m the kind of person who’s prone to melancholy and pessimism, and I care deeply about preserving digital assets.

I’ve always hoped my website and blog could last until the end of my life. But——

“As ship after ship sinks to the bottom of the sea, as person after person becomes a mystery.”

Below are my twenty years of friend links. We used to work on tech, write blogs, and leave friend links for each other in our sidebars, all within the same circle.

Today most of those domains have expired, and those blogs have sunk to the bottom of the sea along with their message boards. I haven’t deleted them — to me they aren’t dead links, they’re history.

The place I come from has inexplicably grown ancient, and my friends are scattered, against their will, across the ruins of the internet.

I cross a long night and keep searching for meaning.

Most of the links on this list no longer open. It serves only as a wall of history.
