I only got into the SGA series this year—at the start of the year I binge-watched the first four seasons in one sitting.
Privately, I stubbornly maintain that this series’ worldbuilding is a bit absurd. The Ancients’ technology, the birth of the Wrath. Practically every planet’s species is identical to Earth humans, and they all speak English too…. Let’s just chalk that up to the inevitable course of civilizational development—from the classical Dark Ages to the modern era, to a world government, to artificial intelligence, to galaxy-wide prosperity, and then to a whole horde of bug-swarming Wrath who want to devour all the food yet somehow never thought to farm humans… It really doesn’t add up. We humans eat chickens and ducks, so we build farms, help them breed, and only by keeping the natural balance can we keep dominating Earth. But from what the show depicts, the Wrath just wait around for people to breed naturally (and this “waiting” isn’t even an active strategy—most of the time it’s simply that they haven’t found a given human planet -_-), then wipe them out completely. They evolved from bugs, so of course they have no clue what sustainable development is?! I used to complain a lot about this show—probably because I was so obsessed with The X-Files, obsessed to the point of getting lost in that kind of sci-fi masterpiece where you can hardly find a single BUG.
No matter how absurd or illogical the worldbuilding/cosmology is, this show is still well worth watching and worth looking forward to. The most watchable part is exactly each episode’s plot. Setting the backstory aside and just watching it as a cops-and-robbers or military action show, every episode is full of strategy, a battle of wits and courage. The scientist’s mind and the tactician’s skill work in perfect sync, turning every crisis around and saving the day. Hoho, I really love their combo—unstoppable. Every character is vividly drawn: McKay, Zelenka, Sheppard, Teyla, Ronon, Carter, Weir, Caldwell, and Ford, and so on.
