After the release of her second album Dear… I Still Don’t Know, Deserts Chang brought in her bandmates Algae, and the four of them buried themselves in the studio and the recording room for eight straight months. After grinding through that long production period, Deserts Chang’s third all-original album, City, finally hit shelves everywhere on May 22.
Unlike her first two albums, this time Deserts Chang tried her hand at “thematic songwriting” for the first time! She settled on the album title City first, then gathered tracks around that theme — ten songs, each expressing one of ten directions of the same theme, all taking “city” as the starting point and running through love, society, land, and everything that happens on that land. You could call it a complete concept album! During production, Deserts Chang even spent three months writing four brand-new songs; the lyrics are like poetry, keeping her signature style while being more profound and more on point.
To stay true to her long-standing commitment to music, Deserts Chang took on the role of main producer this time, handling everything big and small herself. During production it was inevitable that the four of them would disagree at times, and Deserts Chang had to keep reminding herself, from a producer’s standpoint, to put the essence of the music first! Even though the pressure left her short on sleep and wrecked her body clock, Deserts Chang still declared that being able to handle lyrics, composition, arrangement, and production all with her bandmates was a real thrill! Just like the album title City, this new album came together through the joint efforts of professional musicians from several cities. Over the eight-month production period, besides recording at three studios in Taiwan, Deserts Chang and Algae made a special trip to Beijing for mixing, and in the end even sent the album’s master tape to the United States for post-production — the making of it carried out the album concept of City to the letter!
