joanna-wangruolin Two exciting things today, and here’s the second: Joanna Wang’s new album is out!

About the album:

Joanna steps up to producer, co-producing with her father Wang Zhiping. A dream production team, and Joanna thinks the album came out even better than she expected.

Joanna’s first album was produced by her father, Mr. Wang Zhiping. Her father is a musician she respects and admires, but because Joanna has her own very distinct sensibility and ideas about music, the two of them actually argued nonstop throughout the production process. Still, after going through the first album together and seeing the enthusiastic response it got, this time Mr. Wang Zhiping gave Joanna more space and co-produced this album with her. For the arrangements and recording they brought in a dream production team, including guitarist Freddy Koella, who has worked with Carla Bruni; keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr., who has worked with Beck; bassist Paul Bushnell, who has worked with Faith Hill; and drummer Brian Macleod, who has worked with Sheryl Crow. As before, the album was recorded at Mad Dog studio. Recording engineer Eric Corne is himself a fine independent artist, he has a particularly good grasp of the atmosphere Joanna wanted to create, and he gave her a lot of help and advice. As for the engineer handling mastering, mixing and post-production, Pete Doell, he not only has years of experience and has worked with Miles Davis, he is currently producing the music for the globally popular video game Guitar Hero 3.

Beyond singing, writing and producing, she can write lyrics too — Joanna shows off her all-around talent on the new album. On top of her naturally gifted voice and singing and her one-of-a-kind songwriting, on this album Joanna also shows her talent for writing lyrics. Her lyrics, as she describes her own personality, carry a touch of wry humor; the more serious the subject, the more she tends to state it with a slightly playful, ironic touch.

Four songs on this album were composed by the album’s keyboardist, with lyrics by Joanna: Tikiville, Maybe Some Other Time, 我的爱, and 一种念头. Keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr. is himself a member of the band Jellyfish, which has a following in Japan, and is also an excellent songwriter. This time Joanna set Chinese and English lyrics to his brand-new compositions, revealing a new side of her all-around talent. Book your personal request chart for this year.
