The first instant of thought ≠ the first idea

Last night after finishing a phone call with my mom, combined with some of the wisdom Lukia had shared with me before, I had some insights. I wrote them down during the night and organized them this morning. The master says: Whether you’re chanting Buddha’s name or handling affairs, always use the first thought, not the second thought. The true first thought is not the first idea that pops into your head — that first idea is just the consciousness of human nature’s curiosity. Like how many children’s first thought upon seeing ice cream is “I want to eat it,” but eating it might give them a stomachache. The consequences aren’t necessarily something they can afford. The master explains: “More often than not, it’s greed, it’s delusion. Don’t get it wrong. The so-called first thought is seeing your original nature, it’s the outflow of your true mind, your original face. Thoughts of craving food, craving comfort all belong to the deluded mind, the greedy mind — not the true mind.” There is a big house. In the basement of the house lives a giant dragon. It is the owner of the house, but it has been sleeping all along. The house has many servants and stewards. Under the head steward’s leadership, everyone keeps repairing and expanding the house, living their lives in perfect order. The owner has been asleep the whole time — all matters big and small are handled by the steward. As time passes, the steward mistakes himself for the owner and forgets that the true owner is sleeping. The steward is like our consciousness; the dragon is the original face (or you could say, the soul). Many people practice spiritually precisely to awaken the dragon, to recover true insight — only then can the first thought emerge.

Private Notes released

My first personal app, Private Notes, is now live on the App Store. From the first version submission to approval, including one rejection along the way, it took 10 days in total. Private Notes is a password-protected memo app I built for my own needs at work and in daily life. Back when I was a kid, my teacher taught me what Chairman Mao once said: “A good memory is no match for a worn-out pen.” That line has stayed with me ever since, and over the years I’ve put it into practice — if it’s worth remembering, I write it down. Now we’re in the information age, and I’m a heavy user of electronic devices. Going out without my phone cuts my HP and my mood in half. My important information — website accounts, security questions — all lives in my phone’s notes app, carried with me everywhere. Even my bank card details, my phone number’s PUK code, the serial numbers and MAC addresses of all my devices — all of it depends on my phone to remember. But phones are easy for other people to grab and play with. With everything stored on the phone, private data is easy for others to see, so a lot of the time I don’t dare write it down at all…

Loli Adventure project completed and published

Loli’s Adventure was the first mobile game project I saw through to completion as lead programmer. I learned a lot from it and got a feel for how it differs from browser games. The project was built with PHP (AMFPHP) + AIR (Starling plus traditional UI), and on the front end, Starling + traditional UI still runs into plenty of performance limits — from here on, I plan to drop traditional UI entirely for mobile games. This year is a breakout year for mobile platform products, and my interest is sky-high right now.

Expected too much from the AirPort Extreme base station

When it came time to upgrade to a gigabit home router, I agonized for a long time between Cisco’s e4200 and Apple’s AirPort Extreme. In the end, Apple’s big January 6 sale made the decision for me, and I bought the big AE (MD031) on the spot. The big AE paired with a MyBookLive is great value for the money compared with a Time Capsule. The gigabit Ethernet port has genuinely been a huge win — I get up to 100MB/s transferring files from the MBL, though wireless still feels a bit slow. And the one-click network extension you get from pairing the big AE and the little AE is genuinely handy.
